But I tucked that aside for later, I was, after all only a few pages in. It just seemed like a dumb move to not remove some of the really heavy outfit before jumping into a lake. It was at this point I thought I was going dislike Shiori. But in her last moments of vision, she sees a small dragon. Not really thinking things through- Shiori jumps into the lake, in all her betrothal gear and immediately starts to sink and drown. Shiori immediately runs off to stop Kiki from falling apart. Obviously being made of paper, it’s not a great place to park up. Kiki- who throughout both books is a sassy little trouble maker- flies off and lands in the middle of the sacred lake. We also learn she is betrothed to a northern lord, who she really doesn’t want to marry, and is due to go to the betrothal ceremony at that moment. She tried desperately to keep this a secret a long with a paper crane she’s granted life to named Kiki. We find out she has magic- which is forbidden. We open with our main character Shiori, princess of Kiata. Now, I’ll be honest, I was not a fan of first person books, I normally struggle with them, I just can’t stand the “I did this/I said this” style, but it didn’t bother me with this book (and has made it easier to read in this style since).
